Pilgrimage to the best bread in the world ...

Sunday is our lounge day so we let Natalie have her first nap at home while we all took it a little easy. The weather looked mixed so we were unsure whether to head for an outdoor or indoor activity. Either way, we decided to just start walking - we figured that inertia would work in our favor. We were headed to the Petit Palais (which includes a discovery museum) because it looked like it had a little something for everyone and it was close to home. Well it started clearing up by the time we got there and Natalie was asleep in the bjorn so we decided to press on and walk to Poilane, a boulangerie that boasts 'the best bread in the world' -- I do believe that the best bread in the world is very likely in France and could very well be in Paris but I was still sceptical of this claim. I was also very hungry so willing to give it a try. We walked about 2 miles to get there and were more than relieved to find it both where we thought it should be and open on a Sunday (a rarity). So everyone piled in and we all chose a treat or two. The girls each chose a pain au chocolat - Charlotte eviscerated hers to get to the chocolate and then handed Jack the empty pastry carcass - ruthless! Jacqui devoured hers without missing a beat. Jack and I sampled their rustic whole wheat roll, their walnut bread and a mini-baguette. I don't remember anything about the baguette because I was so hungry. The whole wheat was substantial and satisfying, the walnut loaf was a big pile of walnuts loosely held together with dough. All were delicious. So, best bread in the world? Possibly - but I think it will require more research.

As we were on our way back from the boulangerie, we found a small playground on the bank of the seine so we let the girls out but I'm afraid that our girls have discerning tastes when it comes to playgrounds and this one with it's decrepit play structure and scorching metal slide did not cut it. We pressed on to the Petit Palais and the Discovery Museum. By then, Natalie was done with the bjorn and done with being out altogether so I dropped her in the USS Humvee and strolled home while Jack and the girls went inside the museum to see what they could discover.

The girls came home a couple of hours later positively levitating - I can't tell if it was from all the fascinating discoveries they'd made at the museum or the lollipop that Daddy had given them for a snack. Yes, a lollipop!

We were too tired to cook so took the whole clan out for a mediocre meal at a local brasserie. The upside is, the girls love steak frites and we got to have a glass of wine!

Tomorrow marks the end of our second week. Where does the time go? Only three weeks left and still so much to do!
