Before anyone else was even awake, Jack started his day with a run through the cool, quiet streets of the 1st. Knowing that most stores and markets are closed on Sundays, and also knowing that we wanted to make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, he decided to stop in at a butcherie that he saw open and pick up ground beef for our dinner. Using his iPhone for translation, he tentatively ordered boeuf haché. The butcher told him that it was E14 per kilo so he showed him his 20 euro note and said - I'll take this much. At this point he's thinking these are going to be some pretty expensive meatballs and then, to his horror, he sees the butcher pull out filet mignon and start grinding it! In France, the only thing that they use ground beef for is steak tartare and, if your going to eat it raw, I guess you want the good stuff! Anyway, the filet-balls were delish but, next time, I think well use the translator to order ground rump roast!
After the girls got up, we hopped on the metro and cruised over to Jardin Luxemborg which had something for everyone. A pay-to-play playground (5 stars), beautiful sculpted gardens, a carousel, a huge palace and a pond for sailing miniature boats! We will have to come back again because we didn't even have time for the pony rides, pedal carts, puppet shows or swing boats. Luckily it is only a few metro stops from home.
Afterwards, we stopped at Patisserie Sadaharu AOKI - a small chain of patisseries here in Paris and Tokyo. With a Japanese eye for perfection and the French's dedication to culinary delightfulness, this stop was well worth the detour.
We enjoyed a quiet evening in tonight and are trying to rest up for week 2 of our Parisian adventure.
